Fight week has well and truly got underway with the fighters arriving to their hotels in New York, the under-card press conference, weigh-ins and final press conference taking place over the next two days.
Yep, it is certainly a long week to wait for fight fans but the action is just days away now!
With a total of 12 titles, yes 12 titles on the line throughout the full card, there is a lot at stake and so many questions that will need to be answered.
Anthony Joshua v Andy Ruiz Jr
In the main-event current WBA, WBO and IBF Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua returns to action, and will lead the British charge at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.
With AJ’s initial opponent in Jarrell Miller falling through, up stepped the Californian-Ruiz. This will be a tough test for Joshua in his US debut and his opponent is as game as they come. Ruiz and his wild style can ask that question ‘What if Ruiz lands?’ well, anything can happen in Heavyweight boxing as they say…
Joshua looks to solidify his stature as the greatest Heavyweight boxer pound for pound of all time in his American debut, and set up a potential ‘all on the line’ bout with WBC champion Deontay Wilder to unify the division!
Katie Taylor v Delfine Persoon
From Irish boxing sensation Katie Taylor’s amateur run, the fighter from Wicklow looked like she needed a fresh start and different challenge after a difficult 2015. Well I guess turning pro in 2016, boasting an undefeated 13-0 record certainly has gave the Bray-native that extra spring to her step!
This weekend she will look to become the third women to hold four titles in one division at the same time, when she takes on current WBA Lightweight champion Delfine Persoon who is a very experienced fighter and no easy challenge.
The Belgian-boxer holds a record of 43-1, while being on a current 34-fight unbeaten streak. One thing Persoon has over Taylor is that she has seen every style in the sport, but can she cope with the current WBA, WBO and IBF champs lightening-quick hand speed and excellent footwork?
Other title fights on the card feature:
Josh Kelly v Ray Robinson-WBA International Welterweight title fight
Callum Smith v Hassan N’Dam-WBA Super-Middleweight title fight
Tommy Coyle v Chris Algieri-WBO International Light-Welterweight title fight
Anthony Joshua TKO round 9-Joshua to weather the storm thrown at him by Ruiz in the early rounds, using his jab well to frustrate his opponent who will tire in the later rounds.
Katie Taylor decision-Taylor and Persoon to both test out the water in the first three rounds, both landing punches in a back and forth contest. Expect Taylor’s movement and grit to have her winning by a close decision.
