Anthony Joshua v Andy Ruiz Jr: Less than a Month Away

Undefeated Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn finally found their opponent, in Californian Andy Ruiz Jr for AJ’s debut on US soil on the 1st of June.

Ruiz will be the man to step in and replace Jarrell Miller after his failed drug tests. This contest is something the American is relishing and has warned fans not to be fooled by his physique compared to Joshua’s.

The Englishman will defend his IBF, WBA and WBO Heavyweight titles in Madison Square Garden, in the anticipation for a title unification bout with WBC champion Dontay Wilder sometime in the near future.

Joshua’s last bout was against Russian Alexander Povetkin at Wembley in September 2018. AJ won that contest via seventh round KO, while Ruiz Jr’s last fight was a fifth-round victory over Alexander Dimitrenko in April of this year. So this is a very quick turn-around for the challenger.

This is an opportunity that presents Ruiz with the chance to write the wrongs of his first world title fight in 2016 against Joseph Parker, and there is no doubt he’ll be plotting the downfall of Joshua.

Early Odds

Anthony Joshua starts the betting as the early favorite priced at 1/16 with Ruiz Jr the heavy underdog priced at 10/1.

The unbeaten Joshua is seeking a spectacular knockout to stay on course for a mega fight against Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury, but Ruiz believes his confrontational style can wreck the Londoner’s US debut.

Ruiz holds a 32-1 record, with his only loss coming to former WBO champion Joseph Parker, in a very close majority decision.

Anthony Joshua will want to put on a show and looks very fit and healthy on his recent social media posts. While the Californian-Ruiz wants to wreck AJ’s US debut and intends to rip away Joshua’s titles in his bid to be crowned world heavyweight champion.
