Newspaperofrecord to headline Day 1 winners…
Churchill Downs will host this year’s mouthwatering renewal of the quirky, eccentric, fast and furious Ryder Cup-style renewal of the Breeders Cup. There will be 14 races of note worth a total of $30 million and the $6 million feature will be the Breeders Cup Classic.
DAY 1 PICKS
Day 1 we have all the Juvenile races, the Turf Sprint, The Fillies Turf, the Juvenile Fillies, The Juvenile Turf and lastly, the Juvenile itself.
NEWSPAPEROFRECORD looks a good thing to me in the Fillies Turf with two dominating performances. Question marks over what she has beaten but she looks like she will be very hard to peg back with plenty more in the tank potentially. JUST WONDERFUL is 2nd favourite and doesn’t strike me as a likely winner and market support is strong for the favourite and is still a backable price. Don’t be surprised to see THE MACKEM BULLET best of the home contingent and I reckon the step up in trip will suit. She is incredibly strong in the finish but has been left too much to do in the past, I think she has great each-way claims here.
I am no American form dirt expert but BELLAFINA looks a fair prince in the Juvenile Fillies, had she been trained by perhaps a bigger name than Simon Callaghan she would be half the price and at currently around 5/2 represents a fair win chance.
I have no strong fancies in the Turf Sprint or The Turf but I would oppose the A P O’Brien favourites. Anthony Van Dyck is very useful but might find one too good on the ground and Sergei Prokofiev had a career best last time out but this race looks very trappy and I am not sure he will be seen to best effect here.
DAY 2 PICKS
I think LOST TREASURE could outrun his odds here, he is very quirky but I just have a feeling that he might be seen to best effect here with this strongly run race in these conditions. He looks very talented to me and I don’t think we have seen the best of him and this might just see him put in an almighty career best and surprise a few at big odds.
CATALINA CRUISER isn’t my sort of price and I am no Dirt expert but its hard to ignore the very obvious claims through formline and visual impression. I’d be surprised if he was beat. I can almost hear the American commentary as CATALINA CRUISERRRR coasts into contention commandingly to assert close home.
FILLY & MARE TURF
Wild Illusion is a worthy fav having delivered at Longchamp and certainly holds Magic Wand on their epic tussles this season and the forecast conditions will certainly help the favourite more. Sistercharlie looks a huge danger to me and I would be surprised if she was out of the top 3 but EZIYRA looks a shade overpriced and conditions could suit her and with Frankie Dettori up for Dermot Weld who will have his horses running well for sure, she might just spring a minor upset. I can see her going very close.
BREEDERS CUP MILE
Lots of claims but also question marks too, I’ll keep it simple….HAPPILY has run so well in defeat this year and these conditions could be perfect for her to hit the frame again and perhaps find a bit of luck to land a big one. She’s more than an each-way price and should give her running.
BREEDERS CUP TURF
BREEDERS CUP CLASSIC
I’m gonna side with CATHOLIC BOY who is an each-way price and all heart. A horse to have on your side. Will he have the class to win? He certainly had the class to avenge his defeat to Mendelssohn last year with a tanking of 4 and a half lengths. He gets my each-way money as I think this looks open.
EACH WAY YANKEE
