In last night’s second set of last eight games, Barcelona defeated Man United by a slim 1-0 margin and Juventus drew 1-1 with Dutch side Ajax away from home.
Manchester United Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fairly happy with his sides performance, who created chances despite the 1-0 defeat and limited Lionel Messi’s influence on the game. While Juventus will be lucky that they have key target man Cristiano Ronaldo, who earned them a draw away from home in their first leg of their quarter-final tie.
History was made when the former Man United and Real Madrid man scored his 125th Champions League goal in 161 appearances. The Portuguese man became the competitions top scorer, while Messi had a quiet night by his own standards. Ronaldo leads the standings, Messi behind on 108 goals in 132 appearances and Real Madrid record appearance holder Raul who’s third on the list with 71 goals.
Ronaldo adds another to his #UCL collection 🎯
— UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) April 10, 2019
Ronaldo was playing for the first time since he scored a hat-trick to give Juve a 3-2 aggregate victory against Atletico Madrid in the last 16 round, which was over a month ago due to an injury picked up on international duty. Ronaldo made his mark by scoring his fifth Champions League goal of the season, ultimately keeping the Italians in the contest.
At the age of 34, Ronaldo shows no signs of slowing down and begs the questions can anyone catch him? His nearest rival is Barcelona’s Lionel Messi who is 31 and three years the younger, but trails behind the CL record by 17 goals.
Ronaldo made his Champions League debut in January 2003 for Man United, while Messi made his Champions League entrances in December 2004 and initially outscored Ronaldo. The pair have been in healthy competition with each other from Ronaldo’s move to the La Liga and has translated into the Champions League.
The CL top goal scorer bids for his fourth domestic European trophy in a row, yes you heard that correct. Is Ronaldo or Messi the ‘GOAT’? That’s an argument for another day…..
