The fight of the year hits Las Vegas this weekend as we see the highly anticipated rematch between two of the best “pound for pound” boxers on the planet: Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez.
This fight is the first in a mouthwatering boxing schedule between now and Christmas and what a way to kick things off. Last year, this fight played second fiddle to the “pantomime” fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, but now the focus is most certainly on two boxers in their prime and hungry to cement their claim as the worlds greatest.
Settling The Score- Let’s Forget About The Draw
“Triple G” is the most fearsome knockout puncher arguably on the planet, while Alvarez’ in-house boxing skills are admired by those who have reached the very top of the sport. Golovkin lost his perfect record, and while he remains unbeaten, his redemption is at proving that the judges were incorrect first time around. Alvarez, who also craves that mantra will have to prove doubters wrong following his recent suspension for taking performance-enhancing drugs.
Many feel he is lucky to land such a big payday after such a misdemeanour and while Golovkin has never ducked anybody in his career to date, he remains as hungry as ever at the seasoned age of 36. With both sharing almost the same reach and height (Golovkin being one inch bigger in height), the controversial decision of the judges last September may have been the best outcome for boxing fans.
Paths To Glory- What Are The Fighters Gameplan?
The first fight saw Alvarez sparkle in the early rounds, but the longer the duel went on, the more Golovkin took control. Its key for Alvarez to stay away from the ropes and use his technical skills and majestic counterpunching to try and win this fight. Golovkin has a granite chin, and out of all the methods, it’s hardest to envisage an Alvarez stoppage.
Alvarez has shown supreme improvement throughout his career, and that will have to continue if he is to win the “fight of the year”. Golovkin will look to trade as always and stalk his opponent, and his success may come from going to the body; something WBO Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford thinks is essential. Golovkin has rare and extreme power in both hands, and after the fiasco’s of the first fight, he will not want to leave this in the hands of the judging panel.
The Verdict- Who Will Win?
It’s a tough fight to call, and one that has split fans, pundits and boxers alike – never in Boxing do you see the market so evenly poised. I think we will see a classic fight once again with both men even hungrier than before. Alvarez will stamp his authority and class early in the match, but I think the more ravenous man is Golovkin. His relentlessness will win him the fight in the later round, and I think he may even stop him in Rounds 10-12.
Whatever happens, it’s an unmissable event, not just in Boxing, but in sport as a whole. So save some extra-strong coffee, set your alarms in the wee hours and tune in because sporting history and legacy is about to be made.
