This past weekend the second last Premier League games of the season concluded, with Chelsea tightening their grip on fourth place, with Spurs, Arsenal and United all dropping points.
But it was the Saturday night fixture between Newcastle and Liverpool that would capture the attention of the nation. Title contenders Liverpool traveled to St James’ Park facing a potential banana skin and had to overcome a challenge set by former manager Rafa Benitez.
Jurgen Klopp’s men scored after 13 minutes gone on the clock, however, the home side drew level with a strike coming from Christian Atsu in the 20th minute. PFA Player of the year for 2018 Mo Salah put his side in front with a goal in the 28th minute, to take a 2-1 lead into half-time.
All Liverpool needed to do was hold their lead and see out the remainder of the game. Newcastle spoiled the party by scoring through striker Solomon Rondon at the 54th minute, squaring the sides all level.
Fans of the Merseyside club were dealt with a huge blow when winger Salah was stretchered off due to injury, and replaced by Belgian Divock Origi.
Liverpool and Newcastle had chances, but it wasn’t until the 86th minute the title contenders finally scored and took the lead through substitute Origi in this all-important game, and currently sit top of the table on 94 points.
Man City will play their game in hand tonight and look to regain the top spot. City are faced with a tricky home contest when Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City roll into town.
Leicester currently sits in ninth place, and won’t let Pep Guardiola’s men walk over his side. If City win they will go just a point ahead of rivals Liverpool going into the day of the season.
With the last game-week in the season this upcoming weekend, we will know who will be crowned Premier League champions!
