We have an exciting week ahead on the PGA Tour as final preparations are being made for “Jack’s Tournament” – The Memorial.
Given that this event is an invitational, it is no surprise to see the best players involved year upon year.
2019 is no different, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Justin Rose are just a few of golf’s elite to headline the field with the US Open on the horizon.
Played at Muirfield Village, this course has a little bit of everything. By modern standards, it isn’t particularly long but is cleverly designed to test players in different ways.
The course features tree-lined fairways so there will be a premium on accuracy off the tee. In addition, there are 73 bunkers and 11 holes with water in play.
To complete the complete golfing challenge, the greens have severely undulating surfaces and players must be sharp with their short games if they want to challenge for the Championship.
Tiger Woods: 12/1
Tiger had a poor PGA Championship missing the cut and finding it hard to get any momentum over the first two days. This can be put down to suffering from a few niggles and being held back by illness.
Where else to bounce back than the Memorial Tournament where he has dominated in the past?
Tiger will be re-energised and focused after his poor display at the PGA. He has won the Memorial five times and knows his game is in fantastic shape despite his minor blip.
Muirfield plays to his strengths; his imperious iron play gives him an advantage over the field and sets up birdie chances. We know Tiger is granite over his short putts and with undulating greens this too gives the American a strong claim that he can add to his five wins here this week.
Matt Kuchar: 18/1 EW
Like Tiger, Kuchar’s record here makes for impressive reading – in 13 appearances he boasts 1 win, 4 tops 5s and a further 2 top 10s. He is well capable of performing at Muirfield Village.
The steady American has been in fantastic form in 2019 – he ranks 6th for Scoring Average and Strokes Gained in Approach. In addition, he ranks 1st for Greens in Regulation, this will give him a huge advantage if he can reproduce this kind of form.
Kuch is a golfing machine who has made a fortune in the game through his consistency. He is trending in the right direction and is a prime candidate for a Sunday charge.
