The third team to feature in our NFL Team Report is the exciting Kansas City Chiefs.
2018 Season Recap
Last season the Kansas City Chiefs and offensive guru head-coach Andy Reid deployed Patrick Mahomes as starting QB.
The Chiefs moved on from former Superbowl finalist QB Alex Smith and promoted second year star Patrick Mahomes. Coach Reid liked Mahomes so much he traded up in the draft to snap up the top prospect.
The Chiefs finished top of the AFC West last season with a record of 12-4, pipping the San Diego Chargers to top spot. Going 5-0 in their opening five games, the Arrowhead Stadium-side looked unstoppable.
Suffering a first defeat to the Superbowl champions New England Patriots, then picking up four additional wins in their first ten games. Until they came face to face with the other Superbowl contestants the LA Rams, who added a second loss to the Chiefs record.
Making it to the AFC Divisional round they defeated QB Andrew Luck and coach Frank Reich’s Indianapolis Colts 31-13. Coming up against the experienced Patriots again in the AFC Championship game would be where their season ended. A narrow 37-31 point defeat halted their dreams of a Superbowl appearance.
Mr Madden 20-Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes had a breakout season putting himself in the top tier of Quarterbacks and only in his first year as a starter. He could be drafted in the first round of most NFL Fantasy drafts due to his guaranteed 30 plus points a week, or maybe even more.
In 2018 Mahomes threw for 5,000 yards, 50 touchdowns and had 66% completions on his throws. That ‘no look’ passes was something else!
The regular season MVP for the 2018 season, Mahomes was selected to feature on the cover of the new EA Sports Madden 20 game. As EA Sports are the creators of the Fifa franchise, similar rules apply to making this selection as the player with the most excitement and hype the over-riding factors.
The Cheetah and Zeus
I know some non-fans of American Football may look at the title and think ‘what is this wanna-be Yank talking about?’
Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill is the fastest player in the NFL who reached a record high speed of 21.95 mph on one of his routes. So yeah, his nickname has been fully endorsed by the player with the twitter handle ‘@cheetah’, pretty cool right?
Over Hill’s two seasons in Kansas, in 2017 he had 1,183 yards receiving the ball and 7 touchdowns. Last year with the addition of Mahomes, Tyreek totaled 1,479 yards and almost doubled his touchdowns with 12. Pretty incredible from a former sprint athlete in college.
Who is Zeus I hear you say? This is the nickname given to star Tight End Travis Kelce. The 6 foot 5 target is considered the best TE in the league scoring 22 touchdowns and has broke 1,000 yards for three consecutive seasons.
Kelce is heading into his sixth season and can do it all from catching the ball, being used as a blocker and doing things that a guy who’s 260 pounds should NOT be able to do!
Mahomes, Hill and Kelce are the back-bone of Andy Reid’s offense and have the potential to all be selected in the first round of some fantasy drafts.
Former Safety Eric Berry’s story
Chiefs Safety Eric Berry suffers from equinophobia which is a fear of horses. His condition is frequently brought on by the Kansas City Chiefs’ mascot.
In a more serious tone, in the 2015 NFL season the leader of their defense was hit with the worst possible news anyone could ever hear.
Berry was diagnosed and defeated Hodgkin’s lymphoma which is a rare form of cancer. In 2016 he returned to the Chiefs to become a first-team All-Pro and in the process won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year. Just incredible!
In 2017 Berry ruptured his Achilles during the Chiefs’ opening night win against the New England Patriots, leaving the team to play the whole season without his services.
A series of injury set-backs nagged him throughout the 2018 season and resulted in the 30-year old being cut at the end of the season.
Upcoming 2019 Season
This season the Chiefs have moved on from Berry and standout Defensive End Dee Ford, but brought in Tyrann Mathieu and Frank Clark as replacements.
As usual a second year slight regress from a QB is possible. Mahomes will be an excellent pickup and win games single-handily for his team and those daring enough to select him in the first round of your drafts!
The Chiefs should top the AFC West ahead of the Chargers, Broncos and Raiders as well as make the playoffs.
