Ascot Gold Cup – Thursday 4.20pm
Can Stradivarius make it back to back wins in the Royal Ascot Showpiece?
The Group 1 Gold Cup over two miles four furlongs has given us some brilliant winners over the years. Who can forget the brilliant YEATS who won it four years in a row from 2006-2009 or a Royal Winner for the Queen with ESTIMATE in 2013, and more recently STRADIVARIUS who won it last year and aims to be the first horse to win it back to back since Yeats.
STRADIVARIUS comes into this years race in good form unbeaten in his last six races. He has only ran once this season back in May at York being made to work hard by Southern France but ultimately coming out on top.
Trainer John Gosden says the horse will come on for the run and goes into Thursdays big race with jockey Frankie Dettori in a confident mood and will be hard to beat. Current Price Evens.
Selection 2-Cross Counter
This years opposition will give the favorite a stern test, they are headed up by CROSS COUNTER trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin who have already been in the winners enclosure this week with Sprinter Blue Point. Cross Counter is a horse on the up and is a live danger to Stradivarius, having won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington and The Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan in his last two starts.
He goes into the race in fantastic form and at a current price of 4/1 could represent value.
Selection 3-Dee Ex Bee
Other horses to mention in the Race are DEE EX BEE who finished 2nd in last years Derby and now stepped up in trip has won his last two races. Trainer Mark Johnston’s horses are well known to be hard horses to pass and this improving front runner will ensure it’s a true test under champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa. Current Price 5/1.
Aidan O’Brien the all-conquering Irish trainer who has won this race an impressive seven times is represented in this years race by FLAG OF HONOUR , CAPRI and CYPRESS CREEK all solid horses in their own right without being superstars.
It’s difficult to rule out any horse trained by Aidan O’Brien, but he may have to wait another year to take his tally to eight Ascot Gold Cups.
To finish 1st Cross Counter
To finish 2nd Stradivarius
To finish 3rd Dee Ex Bee
