The 2019 Craven Meeting at Newmarket Starts Today

The Next Derby Hero For The Boys In Blue?

The Flat season steps up a notch this week for the 2019 CRAVEN MEETING at NEWMARKET.

This meeting will offer us valuable clues for the classic races this season. The highlight of the week is the CRAVEN STAKES –  Wednesday 3.35pm.

MASAR stole the show last year and went on to win the EPSOM DERBY for the boys in blue Godolphin. This earned both them and trainer Charlie Appleby a first win in the race.

CRAVEN STAKES

The same combination has this year’s favourite for Craven glory in the shape of ZAKOUSKI – currently at 15/8, Zakouski was a winner on debut back in November at Kempton. He impressed that day and is currently around 7/1 with Toalsbet.com for 2000 Guineas glory! Odds that are destined to shorten should he win the Craven.

He has live dangers in the form of ROYAL MARINE who sits at 3/1 currently with us. It is also owned by Godolphin but trained by Saeed Bin Suroor. It is in a rich vein of form with 2 wins from 4 starts including group 1 glory at Longchamp winning the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

Another danger to the favourite is SET PIECE. Trained by Hugo Palmer, Set Piece is unbeaten in two starts on all-weather tracks. That said, this is a big step up in class but with big race jockey Frankie Dettori booked for the ride 10/1 represents good each-way value.

FIELDEN STAKES

Tuesday’s Fielden Stakes 3.00pm sees a small but select field head to post with just 7 runners currently entered. The market is headed by WESTERN AUSTRALIA – trained by Aidan O’Brien, Western Australia is priced at 13/8.

Western Australia ran a fantastic race in last years Group 1 Vertum Futurity Trophy Stakes were at 50/1 it managed to finish a mere length behind the eventual winner Magna Grecia. His win record isn’t anything special with just 1 win from 7 outings so it will need to find its best form to get the win.

Another horse in the race with a big reputation is KADAR. It was a winner on racecourse debut at Haydock back in September for trainer Karl Burke; he hasn’t been seen on the track since then but connections seem happy with him over the winter and he looks set for a big run –  currently 4/1.

NELL GWYN STAKES

Tuesdays Nell Gwyn Stakes 3.35pm is traditionally known as a race that gives us some clues for the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks and this year is no different with a competitive field ready to do battle.

Currently, the market is headed by MOT JUSTE at 7/2, this filly is very progressive and rounded off last season with 2 wins on the bounce. If she continues last seasons form she will be hard to beat.

Her main danger seems to be MAIN EDITION. At 4/1, this tough filly ran seven times last season winning four. Few would be surprised if Main Edition has a productive campaign.

Both MOT JUSTE and MAIN EDITION are entered for the 1000 Guineas. They both sit at 25/1 with Toalsbet.com. If, as expected, they both run big races in the Nell Gwyn those odds could go. Now is definitely the right time to get those Antepost bets on. We have all the classics priced up there is plenty of value to be had this time of the flat season.
