This year, Golf’s oldest and most prestigious tournament is coming to Northern Ireland. The Open Championship 2019 will be hosted at the Royal Portrush golf course on the 18-21st of July 2019.
For the first time since 1951, Northern Ireland will stage The Open Championship and will be at the center of the global sporting world, as the tournament is held outside of Scotland and England for only the second time in the Championship’s 150-year history.
17 million has been pumped into Portrush for the highly-anticipated tournament, with tourism expected to boom up in the north-coast on the selected dates.
As mentioned, The Open was first staged outside of mainland Britain in 1951 when the championship was played at Royal Portrush. Max Faulkner claimed his only Major Championship with a two-shot victory during that competition.
A successful staging of the tournament is likely to mean the major could return in the future, and there is no doubt that the best golfers in the world will be sure to make an appearance including our own Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington.
Sports fans from throughout Ireland and the world are expected to come out in their numbers to watch the world’s greatest golfers compete for the iconic Claret Jug prize!
In 2012 Royal Portrush last hosted the Irish Open won by Welshman Jamie Donaldson. This was the first time that a European Tour event had been played in Northern Ireland, and the first time since 1953 that the Irish Open had been played in Northern Ireland.
Now The Open Championship will make its mark in Northern Ireland. The practice days start on Tuesday 16th of June, with the competition running from Thursday the 18th to Saturday the 21st!
Golf fans are in for a real treat this year, and there is no doubt that the tournament is set to become one of the biggest and best events of the year.
