This year, Golf’s oldest and most prestigious tournament is coming to Northern Ireland. The Open Championship 2019 will be hosted at the Royal Portrush golf course on the 18-21st of July 2019.
For the first time since 1951, Northern Ireland will stage The Open Championship and will be at the centre of the global sporting world, as the tournament is held outside of Scotland and England for only the second time in the Championship’s 150-year history.
As mentioned, The Open was first staged outside of mainland Britain in 1951 when the championship was played at Royal Portrush. Max Faulkner claimed his only Major Championship with a two-shot victory during the competition.
A successful staging of the tournament is likely to mean the major could well return in the future, and there is no doubt that the best golfers in the world will be sure to make an appearance including our own Rory McIlroy.
Sports fans from throughout Ireland and the world are expected to come out in numbers to watch the world’s greatest golfers compete for the iconic Claret Jug prize.
In 2012 Royal Portrush last hosted the Irish Open won by Welshman Jamie Donaldson. This was the first time that a European Tour event had been played in Northern Ireland, and the first time since 1953 that the Irish Open had been played in Northern Ireland.
Us Irish Golf fans are in for a real treat this year at the end of July, and there is no doubt that the tournament is set to become one of the best events of the year. Make sure to mark these dates in your calendar!
