The Return of the Flat Season:

By Chris Lowry

This Saturday (30th March) sees the official start of the Flat season in Britain at Doncaster Racecourse.

As always, it’s a good quality card to kick things off. We have a couple of listed class races and competitive handicaps for flat fans to get their teeth into.

LINCOLN 3.35pm

No race on the card is more competitive than the 3.35pm Lincoln – it is certainly the highlight of a cracking days action.

The market is headed by Godolphin’s AUXERRE who is currently priced at 7/2 on He is unbeaten in his last 3 starts and has been Favourite for this race all through the winter.

His connections seem bullish with big race jockey James Doyle staying to ride the Favourite rather than making the trip to Dubai for world cup night, this is a tip in itself.

As I mentioned earlier this is a competitive race. There have been some big market moves in the days leading up to this race – SALTONSTALL has been backed in from 25/1 now to 10/1 on It was trained last season by Mick Halford before transferring to Adrian Mcguinness.

The horse won a big Handicap at the Curragh last season beating Master Speaker who has since franked the form by running a big race finishing 3rd in the Irish Lincolnshire last week.

Another horse who features high in the betting is RIPP ORF. He has run well in a number of Big Handicaps over the last couple of seasons and is one of the most experienced runners in the field.

Ripp Orf has 4 wins to his name and numerous place efforts in these big field handicaps, you can be sure of a good run from this tough horse.

Away from Doncaster and onto more exotic surroundings in Dubai, the DUBAI WORLD CUP NIGHT is taking place at MEYDAN RACECOURSE.

There are four Group 1s on the card. The highlight is undoubtedly the Dubai World Cup where the winner will bring home a staggering $7.2million!!!

Al Quoz Sprint – Meydan 1.30pm

Group 1 action kicks off in Meydan 1.30pm with the Al Quoz Sprint. This race is all about BLUE POINT – he’s odds on at 8/13 with This is an outstanding horse over sprint distances having won the Kings Stand at Royal Ascot last season.

He is proven at Group 1 level and will take some stopping.

The Dubai Turf 3.20pm is another brilliant race on the card. Aidan OBrien has sent over I CAN FLY with Ryan Moore on Board. Moore won a race at Dundalk a few weeks ago in preparation for this race but this is a tough assignment ahead.

That said, I can see a big run from this one and at around 12/1 it certainly offers us good each way value.

The Favourite for this race is ALMOND EYE, she is unbeaten in 6 races and is highly regarded in her native Japan. They view her as the next big superstar of Japanese racing.

I think she will win this race and announce herself on the world stage, she is currently 11/10 on

The final race of a great nights action in Dubai is the Dubai World Cup at 4.40pm. THUNDER SNOW was last year’s victor and rides again this year having been there and done it. At 11/2, Thunder Snow represents good value in this year’s renewal.

One I like for this year’s big race is NORTH AMERICA. He has a great record round Meydan with 6 Wins to his name.

North America comes into the big race unbeaten at this year’s carnival – 2 wins from 2 make impressive reading and he won last time out by almost 3 lengths despite being eased down. He is currently 3/1 on
