What a card we have this Saturday night! UFC 244-Masvidal v Diaz takes place inside the famous Madison Square Garden in New York. This event will also mark the UFC’s 500th event in it’s 20-year history and is one of the most anticipated events this year!
A main-event Welterweight bout between Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal and Nate Diaz who needs no introduction, headlines this massive event in the Big Apple on a stacked card this Saturday night.
In the co-main event former Middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum welcomes another former title challenger in Darren Till to a new weight class. The Liverpudlian-Till is moving up from 170-pounds to the 185-pound division.
The former Lightweight challenger Jorge Masvidal and The Ultimate Fighter Series 5 winner Diaz will square off to become the baddest motherf*cker in the game. And yes, the UFC actually created a ‘BMF’ title just for this match-up (this isn’t a joke)
Two fighters who grew up from the underground fighting scene in what has been dubbed a West Coast v East Coast showdown. There is no doubt both of these fighters are absolute savages and two who have been in the game forever. This is their chance to finally lift a title and main-event in the mecca that is MSG!
The UFC has been heavily promoting this card and designed an excellent ‘no censored’ type billboard for this grudge match of a lifetime, for two veterans of the mixed martial arts game.
Masvidal took a two year break from the sport after suffering back to back losses to Demain Maia and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in 2016. On return to action in March 2019, Gamebred knocked out Darren Till in the second round and put in a performance of the night.
He then went on to score the fastest knockout in UFC history in just FIVE seconds! A flying knee-knockout over Ben Askren sent shock-waves throughout the MMA community and firmly rocketed Masvidal’s stock up the Welterweight rankings.
Nate Diaz went on his own hiatus after recording the biggest victory of his career over former two-division world champion Conor McGregor in 2016. He would then suffer defeat in August of the same year in the rematch, before going rogue.
In his return bout in August 2019 the fighter from Stockton, California beat former UFC Lightweight champion Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis in style and called for a ‘baddest motherf*cker’ bout against Masvidal.
The UFC seen this as a big cash pay-day and quickly booked the bout. As well they specially designing the ‘BMF’ title, which is one of a kind and up for grabs for one night only!
Also at UFC 244-Masvidal v Diaz, Darren Till love him or hate him never backs away from a challenge and has decided to step up to 185-pounds for his next tour of the octagon.
Till has suffered two huge losses in a row at Welterweight to champion Tyron Woodley and in March this year to main-event star Masvidal. Can he find success at a new weight class?
Till had problems getting to New York ahead of this week. He was recently arrested while on holiday in Tenerife and this may have had an impact on his working visa application to fly stateside.
Who else to test yourself against than former Middleweight title contender Kelvin Gastelum. After beating Michael Bisping and Jacre Souza, the American faced Israel Adesanya for a shot at Robert Whitaker’s Middleweight crown. Unfortunately falling at the final hurdle.
A victory for either fighter will put them back in the title conversation, in the hope to secure a shot at the Middleweight title down the line.
Stephen Thompson v Vicente Luque
Derrick Lewis v Blagoy Ivanov
Kevin Lee v Gregor Gillespie
Corey Anderson v Johnny Walker
