Fan favourite Justin Gaethje goes to war against opponent James Vick this weekend’s UFC Fight Night in Lincoln, USA. Fight fans have come to expect nothing less than utter carnage when Gaethje enters the octagon and with a notable mention of cage vet Michael Johnson in the evening’s co-main event, UFC Lincoln is shaping up to offer barbaric scenes! Here is how I think the fight card will go down:
The main event is a real scorcher, James Vick has been on a tear with a knockout of Joe Duffy and a win against the tough Francesco Trinaldo. The giant-like lightweight will come in confident, standing at 6’3” inches tall and hailing a 13-1 record. This could be the first time we hear James Vick really stake a claim for a title shot and with a win against Gaethje, he may just have a convincing case.
Justin Gaethje is no joke, he comes to war every time.
However, Justin Gaethje is no joke, he comes to war every time. Despite coming off 2 losses at the hands of former champion Alvarez as well as resurgent Dustin Poirier, he will go in knowing he is battle tested. Previously dominating in WSOF, he has struggled to match his previous performances in the UFC, with some claiming rely on his high wrestling calibre rather than engaging in a slugfest against elite opponents.
This is my pick for fight of the night – these boys definitely come to fight! Although Michael Johnson is coming off 3 losses, his defeats have included a change in weight division as well as losses to the current lightweight king, Khabib Nurmanegedov. The American has competed at the highest level in the UFC, boasting a stacked record of his 17-13!
Fili is the latest of Uriah Faber’s Team Alpha Male products
Andre Fili has an impressive 18-5 record and is riding the buoyant wave of 2 fight win streak- such things are rarely long-lived in the UFC. It would appear 28-year-old is in the prime of his fighting career and may well have the tools to end Johnson’s long-standing career in the UFC with a fourth consecutive defeat at Lincoln. Fili is the latest of Uriah Faber’s Team Alpha Male products and with a seasoned selection of training partners at his disposal, the Hawaiian native will look to take advantage of it.
A strawweight scrap for the ladies as 7-6-0 Cortney Caey goes to battle Angela Hill. With similar stats coming into the fight, this could be a very close match-up. I see Angela Hill sticking with her stand-up approach while Cortney Casey will attempt to nullify attacks with experienced grappling.
Ellenberger is a certified Octagon legend, boasting an extensive resume of 31-14-0. Jake comes up against Barberena, currently 13-5-0 in an intriguing welterweight affair. Ellenberger is on a 3 fight skid and will know its do or die as he enters the cage in Lincoln.
Bryan Barberenas’ last fight was a loss to the talented Englishman, Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards, and will also be looking to get back to winning ways as he attempts to strengthen his argument as one of the divisions elite.
This flyweight bout should produce fireworks with both fighters eye on a title shot. The Brazilian, Figueiredo, hails a 14-0 record and comes in the slight favourite due to his finishing qualities. Standing across from him is no other than John Moraga, number seven ranked in the world with experience against the ‘who’s who’ of flyweight MMA.
Eryk Anders proudly has a 10-1 record and in his last fight, he fought the legend in Lyoto Machida where he lost by narrowly by decision. The Philippines born fighter carries very heavy hands which have produced 6 KOs in his career.
Tim Williams, who is also coming off a loss in his UFC debut, has suffered the humiliation of a KO loss at the hands of the Polish fighter, Oskar Piechota. The 32-year-old has a respectable record of 15-4, so this could be as close in the octagon as it is on paper.
