UFC Vancouver – Cowboy v Gaethje

The UFC will return to the Rogers Arena for UFC Vancouver this Saturday night. A Lightweight bout between Donald Cerrone and Justin Gaethje is scheduled to throw down as the main-event.

With the first of this month’s four big cards in the history books, the promotion will make the jump north of the border to Vancouver, Canada on Saturday night.

Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is a veteran of the UFC. At 36 years-old the former 155-pound title challenger has the most wins (23) and most finishes (16) in UFC history. A nice feather to add to his famous Cowboy hat!

Where do both stand in the Lightweight division?

Cerrone will take on former WSOF Lightweight champion Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje, a man who is known for his fierce striking ability and unwritten nickname ‘most violent fighter in the sport’.

The division remains stuck at a standstill with former UFC Lightweight champion Conor McGregor enjoying a seemingly endless hiatus and interim champion Tony Ferguson out of competition.

The two crowd-pleasing fighters will want to get back in the conversation for a top contenders spot to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s title (I didn’t google this spelling) but he has just fought last weekend.

Are we in for a war with two battle tested strikers?

Heading into UFC Vancouver, Cowboy Cerrone (36-12) will want to get back in the win column while Gaethje (20-2) will step into the UFC’s octagon for only the fourth time.

Cowboy Cerrone was on a superb 3-fight win streak securing victories over Mike Perry, Alexander Hernandez and Al Iaquinta before his loss to Tony Ferguson in June.

Gaethje has had a 2-2 run from his Ultimate Fighter finale debut victory over Michael Johnson in July 2017. Two quick fire losses to former champ Eddie Alvarez and interim champion Dustin Poirier were the only two blemishes on ‘The Highlights’ record.

However Gaethje got back on the horse with impressive knockout victories over James Vick and Edson Barbosa recently in March. Can he add another big name to his resume? I can see a knockout victory for Gaethje in the first round.

Back Justin Gaethje to win-1/2

Justin Gaethje has amounted 17 TKO/KO victories in his 20-2 record, pretty impressive right?

Donald Cerrone has recently made the jump from Lightweight to Welterweight, then back down to Lightweight. The weight cut for a fighter at the age of 36 certainly doesn’t get easier with age. As well as taking punches to the face….

That loss to Ferguson and quick one month turn-around certainly took it out of Cerrone. I can see Gaethje putting the pressure on early forcing Cowboy to quake is his boots, with a barrage of punches coming his way. Don’t blink!

Gaethje will need to be careful not to get caught inside the Rogers arena, as Cerrone is one of the best strikers in the game.

Submission specialists-Teixiera v Krylov

In the co-main event at UFC Vancouver, Brazilian Light-Heavyweight Glover Teixiera (29-7) faces Russian Nikita Krylov (25-6) in what could be a highly technical bout?

UFC veteran Texiera is on a 2-fight win streak over Karl Robertson and Ion Cutelaba both via submission. While the 27-year old Krylov will make only his third walk to the octagon.

In his UFC debut he suffered a submission loss to Jan Blachowicz but got back in the W column with a rear-naked choke submission over Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 236 in April. I can see a Teixiera submission in round 2.

Back the more experienced Brazilian Teixiera to win-10/11
